Spring 2011
By JoAnne Leone
Enough, already! It’s been too long since we all gathered at the UC Farmer’s Market, and like so many of you……I’m ready to start meetin’, again. Spring has sprung at that means that garage sales are popping up more prolifically than dandelions. In mid April, the Market opened Trash and Treasures (T&T). It was just a 2 week warm-up. T&T will be closed this Friday and will be reopening on May 6th, from 8am till 1pm every Friday, for the entire season. Visit our new Trash and Treasures page on our website for more information on how to be a seller.
This Friday and Saturday the Market is playing host to the Union County Garden Club as they present their Annual Plant Sale and Exhibits. So many of you wait to plant your garden annuals and window boxes until after this sale, every year. The Garden Club spends so many months getting ready for this event, and this year it will prove to be its best. For more details click our new “Special Events” page.
Market Manager Mickey Cummings has been anything but dormant all winter. In January he gathered his committee (comprised of Larry Garrett, Peggy Deyton, Freddy Collins, Mike Clark, and myself) to begin work on the new season. We established new guidelines, worked diligently on a 6 month calendar of events and worked together to create new opportunities for the community to gather at the Market this year.
We will be kicking things off on Thursday, May 5th, with our Blairsville’s Bloomin’ Spring Garden Expo. This is an evening event, being held from 4pm till 8pm, rain or shine. There will displays from vendors to meet all your gardening and farming needs. Beautiful displays of plants will be available, and we have several speakers that will be talking about different aspects of establishing your best garden this year. Don’t worry about dinner. There will be food vendors, as well. And crafters, with garden and garden art related items will be there too. Yep, you guessed it – more info can be found by clicking the “Special Events” page.
The website has also created a calendar page that lists in chronological order every thing we are scheduled to do at the market for the next six months. We encourage you to bookmark our home page and refer to our site every week to keep your pulse on all the activities.
This week, in closing, I want to encourage all non-profit, civic and Church organizations to visit the section of our website that addresses fund raising opportunities at the Market. If you would like to speak with Mickey Cummings about vendor opportunities, call 706-781-8802. See you this Friday at the Market!
