Farmers Market Announces Recipe Contest

On Saturday, October 15th, the Union County Farmers Market will be holding “A Taste of Appalachian Sweetness” Festival from 7am-1pm. The focus will be on our region’s honey, sorghum and apples. Included in the day’s festivities will be a recipe contest.

“Last year we had a great selection of recipes, but the theme was just apples. This year we are opening it up to recipes that include any one or more of the festival’s three featured ingredients” explains, JoAnne Leone, one of the festival’s organizers. Cooks from all the surrounding communities are encouraged to enter their creations.

Last year’s recipe contest winners were recently featured in Georgia Magazine’s online edition. Prizes for this year contest have yet to be announced. Anyone interested in entering the competition must complete an entry form and submit it and the prepared recipe on the day of the festival, between the hours of 7am and 10am at the Manager’s Office. Judging will begin at 10:30. Winners will be announced at Noon.

You can pick up an entry form at the County Courthouse at the Commissioner’s Office, or at the Farmer’s Market Office on Tuesday nights, Friday or Saturday mornings before the Festival.

For more information, call JoAnne Leone at 760-781-3306. The Union County Farmers Market is open every Tuesday afternoon from 4pm-8pm and Saturday’s from 7am-1pm through October 22. It’s located at 148 Old Smoky Rd in Blairsville (behind Home Dept). For more information on becoming a vendor, contact Mickey Cummings, Market Manager, at 706-439-6030.
